This is the full introduction to Garifuna Livingston in a single half-day. It folds the Garifuna Cultural Walk and the Garifuna Drums & Dance workshop into one three-hour experience, so you get the story first and the instrument second.
You start on foot with a Garifuna guide in traditional dress, walking the streets of La Buga, hearing how the Garifuna reached this coast in 1802 after their ancestors were exiled from St. Vincent, and greeting neighbors in the language UNESCO named a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Then you sit down behind a real Garifuna drum. A local teacher shows you the primero, the high lead drum, and the segunda, the deep bass that holds the beat, and once the rhythm is in your hands you learn the punta and hunguhungu steps that answer it.
Booked separately, the walk and the workshop run Q530. Together here they’re Q385. Same two experiences, one afternoon, better value.

The complete introduction to Garifuna culture in Livingston, walk and workshop back to back over three hours. You’ll cover the town and its history on foot, then put your hands on a real Garifuna drum and learn the dance that goes with it. It runs in English, with Spanish on request, for groups of 1 to 15, private or shared. Everything starts at the Dibasei office.

Only if you’re not already in Livingston. The town is boat-only. Lanchas run from Puerto Barrios in about 30 minutes and from Río Dulce in roughly 90. Boat fare isn’t included in the tour price.
The first part is a relaxed 90 minutes on foot over flat but uneven streets. The drumming and dance happens seated and standing at the office.
