Livingston is not a place you read about. It’s a place you walk into. On this hour-and-a-half walk you move through the streets of La Buga alongside a Garifuna guide dressed in traditional yellow, white and black, the colors of the culture. You learn how the Garifuna reached this coast in 1802 after their ancestors were exiled from the island of St. Vincent, and why a town with no road to it became the heart of Garifuna life in Guatemala.
Along the way your guide greets people in Garifuna, the language UNESCO named a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001, and shows you how a few words open doors that a camera never will. The walk ends with a short session on the drums, primero and segunda, the two-drum heartbeat that carries Garifuna music.
This is the introduction. If you want the fuller day, it pairs naturally with the drumming and dance workshop.

A relaxed 90 minutes on foot through Livingston with a Garifuna guide, told from the inside. You’ll hear how the Garifuna reached this coast, greet neighbors in the language, and finish with the drums in your own hands. It runs in English, with Spanish available on request, for groups of 1 to 15, private or shared. Everything starts at the Dibasei office.

Only by boat. Lanchas run from Puerto Barrios in about 30 minutes and from Río Dulce in roughly 90. Boat transport is not included in the tour price.
