Detail

The drum is the center of Garifuna music. Without it, people here will tell you, there is no music at all. On this two-hour workshop you don’t watch someone else play it, you learn it yourself, sat behind a real Garifuna drum with a local teacher showing you how the rhythm is built.

You’ll meet the two drums that carry the sound: the primero, the smaller high-pitched drum that leads and accents the dancer, and the segunda, the deep bass drum that holds the beat steady underneath. Both are carved from a single hardwood trunk and headed with animal skin, the same way they’ve been made for generations. Once the rhythm is in your hands, you learn the movement that answers it, the hips-and-feet steps of punta and the swaying circle of hunguhungu.

This is the fuller counterpart to the Cultural Walk. Where the walk introduces Livingston, this one puts an instrument in your hands. Book both together as Garifuna Por Un Día and you get the history walk and this workshop in one half-day.

What to Expect

Two hours of real hands-on learning, not a performance you sit and watch. You’ll play a Garifuna drum with a local teacher, pick up the primero and segunda rhythms, then learn the punta and hunguhungu steps that go with them. It runs in English, with Spanish on request, for groups of 1 to 15, private or shared. Everything starts at the Dibasei office.

  • Play a real Garifuna drum, not a demonstration model
  • Learn the primero and segunda rhythms by hand
  • Pick up the punta and hunguhungu dance steps
  • Finish able to hold a basic Garifuna rhythm yourself

Itinerary

Overview

Meet at the Dibasei office. Your teacher introduces the two drums and their role in Garifuna music, then puts one in front of you and walks you through the basic rhythm hands-on. Once the beat is steady, you move to the dance, learning the steps that answer the drum. The session builds to playing and moving together before it wraps.

FAQ

Do I need any musical experience?

None. The teacher starts from zero and builds one rhythm at a time, so first-timers finish able to hold a basic beat.

What language is the workshop in?

English by default. Spanish is available on request, so mention it when you reserve.

Do I need to arrange a boat?

Only if you’re not already in Livingston. The town is boat-only. Lanchas run from Puerto Barrios in about 30 minutes and from Río Dulce in roughly 90. Boat fare isn’t included in the tour price.

Is this good for kids?

Yes. Drumming lands well with children and the session flexes to the group, so families do fine.

What's the difference between this and the Cultural Walk?

The walk is a guided introduction to Livingston and its history on foot. This one is hands-on drumming and dance. Do both together as Garifuna Por Un Día.
